In this sermon on Matthew 6:5-8, Jesus teaches about true prayer and confronts hypocritical religiosity that seeks the approval of men instead of communion with God. The Pharisees liked to pray in public to be seen and admired by people. Christ, however, teaches that prayer is not a religious spectacle, but a sincere relationship between the child and his heavenly Father. Jesus also condemns the empty repetitions of the Gentiles, who believed they would be heard by speaking many words. The Lord is not impressed by long speeches or religious formulas. He knows perfectly the needs of his children even before they are presented in prayer. True prayer is marked by sincerity, humility, dependence, and trust in the Father's care.
