Joe Bebop Lane - The Arrival
Joe Be-Bop Lane - The Arrival! Full album, released in 1994 on Spiral Scratch, catalogue number 0012. Australian jazz / bop recording featuring Joe Lane on vocals and as bandleader. This upload is shared as a personal tribute to Joe Be-Bop Lane, who was a dear friend and mentor to my father, Australian jazz pianist and composer Dorian Mode. Joe would often come over to our house to rehearse with Dad when I was a child. I remember him as a warm, unforgettable presence, and one of my most powerful memories of him came after he had suffered a stroke. He was living in a nursing home and was no longer able to speak. During one visit, Dad put on a Charlie Parker CD, and suddenly Joe began scatting along with the music. We were all stunned. Even though speech had left him, the music was still there, alive and blazing. Dad realised that this could become a way to communicate with Joe, almost like a musical yes-or-no language. I also remember one night when Dad and I were coming home very late from the Easter Show. We drove past Joe’s nursing home, and I had an overwhelming feeling that we needed to visit him. Dad explained that it was too late and past visiting hours, so we couldn’t go in. Sadly, Joe passed away that very night. This album is uploaded in respect, remembrance, and gratitude for Joe Lane’s life, music, humour, spirit, and contribution to Australian jazz.
