Exploring Steens Mountain in Eastern Oregon

A 3 night van camping adventure to Steens Mountain, the 7th highest mountain in Oregon. The unique geology of this area leads past the tree-line up gentle slopes before turning into rocky steep cliffs of with giant glacier carved bowl like valleys. The basalt blocks descend down converging glaciers before flattening out to the Alvord Desert visible below. I spent 2 night van camping in my Honda Element at Kiger Gorge off Steens Mountain Rd, the highest altitude road in Oregon. While at Kiger Gorge, the Steens Mountain High Altitude Running Camp 2022 group of 100+ high schoolers came through for a group shot over Kiger Gorge. The next day, I traveled along the rim with stops at Little Blitzen Gorge, East Rim Overlook, Big Indian Canyon, and a hike down to Wildhorse Lake for a quick swim. I camped in my van at Steens Mountain summit trailhead at 9,508ft but didn't get to the top of the summit this trip. Note: I did not realize at the time of filming that Steens Mountain is a Wilderness Area which outlaws use of motorized equipment such as drones.
