Palio di Legnano 2026 - Corteo storico

31.05.2026 Legnano (MI) - 80th Palio di Legnano (850th Anniversary of the Battle of Legnano of 29 May 1176) - Historical parade (Made of approximately 1200 costumed figures. The procession is divided into three main parts: Delegations and banners of the cities belonging to the League of Municipalities; Contrade; Carroccio and Company of Death. The third part of the parade is the one most linked to the re-enactment of the battle, and consists of the Carroccio around which on 29 May 1176 the army of the League of Municipalities lined up against Frederick I, known as Barbarossa, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. The triumph immediately had great resonance and even in subsequent eras was seen as a stage in the reconquest of national freedom. For this reason Legnano is mentioned, the only city besides Rome, in the Italian national anthem: "From the Alps to Sicily... everywhere is Legnano". Pulled by six white oxen, the Carroccio houses, mounted on its platform, the altar with the Cross of Ariberto. The martinella, superimposed on the cross, is played on the field to the flight of the doves. Three figures in religious robes and six musicians with clarions take their places on the cart. The Carroccio is escorted by infantrymen and is followed by the Company of Death made up of knights in costume led by their captain Alberto da Giussano. Author Fabio Barbalini
