Review: Neewer Basics mini camera flash with fill light A10L $35 (Vs Ulanzi Spark Lite SL03)
Amazon Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/3WSu57t Price as reviewed: $35 NEEWER BASICS Mini Camera Flash with 2W LED Video Light/GN10/0.5-3.5s Recycle/550 Flashes/6500K±300K/800mAh Battery, Compatible with Canon Fujifilm Sony Nikon Ricoh DSLR Standard Hot Shoe Camera, A10L From the NEEWER Store This USB-C rechargeable mini camera flash comes with a snap on diffuser and also has a built in video light. The flash is about 8 times more powerful than the built in flash on my Sony A6300 camera (and almost 2x more powerful than the Ulanzi Spark Lite SL03). I feel it is plenty strong for most close up non-sports use, and if it's too strong you can back it down to 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 of full power. The flash angles 90 degrees, so you can bounce it off of ceilings or walls if required. The flash takes about 3 seconds to recycle on the 1/1 setting, but only 0.5 seconds at the 1/8 setting. This isn't a speed flash, but the refresh time isn't horrible either. The fill light also has 4 brightness settings and 4 color temperatures (Warm white sorta warm, sorta cold, and cold white). Battery life on the fill light is just above 2.5 hours of continuous usage. It has a slide switch on the side for on/off functionality, and three buttons on the back that allow you to select the fill light or flash, pick the flash or fill light power, and fill light temperature (or test fire the flash). The buttons are easy to use and not overloaded, so you don't have to memorize a complicated "long press or short press" combo to access any feature. It claims to have a 2.95 Wh battery, and took 4 Wh to fully recharge from empty. It claims the fill light is a "2W" light, but lasted for 2.5 hours in runtime tests. So either the battery is 5Wh (unlikely, as it only took 4 Wh to recharge) or the fill light only uses 1.6 watts. [I didn't have any complaints about the brightness of the fill light, but it is not a full studio light, it's just a fill light. Overall I found it very functional and a sold addition for a photographer who needs a flash and wants the flexibility to shoot video with a small fill light, but doesn't need the full speed/power/battery swapping ability of a "real" full sized flash. My review of the Ulanzi Spark Lite SL03 can be found here: • Review: Ulanzi Spark Lite SL03 Micro Flash... FYI, the lens I was using in this video is the TTArtisan AF 23mm F/1.8, which I reviewed here: • Review: TTArtisan AF 23mm f/1.8 E-Mount AP... One other difference that was pointed out to me after I posted this video: The Neewer has two distinct modes (fill light, or flash) and you can't mix them, while the Ulanzi has three modes (fill light, flash, or both active at the same time) and you CAN trigger the flash with the fill light on.
