Organizing Family History Photos and Documents

Organize genealogy and family history today! Tips and tricks for keeping your genealogy research organized. As you build a family tree and discover your ancestors, you need to have a strategy for keeping things organized. Are you buried in paper and photographs? Several organizational methods are outlined for both paper and digital records with an emphasis on keeping things simple. My motto: 1. Keep it simple 2. Be consistent 3. Make it convenient and accessible 4. Organize as you go Genealogy programs which are held on one's computer require the digital storage of documents and photographs to remain the same or they struggle to find the document. Setting up a system early on will save you a great deal of time in the long-run. While they are endless ways to organize digital records, we will focus on a file folder for each surname, a file folder for paternal and maternal lines or all documents in one folder. Naming documents will be discussed as well with an emphasis on keeping things simple. Paper documents can be organized with one family in one folder, color coding family lines can be added to this system. Notebooks are another options and organizational options will be discussed.
