A subterranean time bomb is keeping an entire community in constant danger due to the government's lack of structural solutions. In this investigative report by Mario Guerrero for Azteca Noticias, we document the humanitarian and environmental crisis facing families in the town of San Martín Cuautolalpan and the Villas de San Martín housing development in the municipality of Chalco, State of Mexico. Since 2009, the UNAM Geosciences Center has officially cataloged a geological fault that runs for almost 2 kilometers and reaches a depth of up to 15 meters. With the onset of each rainy season, the softening of the ground accelerates soil displacements of between four and six centimeters, causing severe fractures in walls, detachment of facades, tilting of houses, and the complete rupture of water pipes. The risk of collapse and flooding is so high that public works such as the local market have been completely abandoned and are now subject to vandalism, while schools, supermarkets, and gas stations operate under a constant threat of evacuation. Residents are denouncing the institutional abandonment by municipal and state authorities, who have limited themselves to providing technical opinions from Civil Protection recommending evacuation, but without offering a real relocation plan, compensation, or financial support. Given this situation, the affected residents are demanding updated geological studies and the implementation of an urgent water management plan that includes reforestation of the upper area, rehabilitation of water reservoirs, and the construction of gabion dams to contain the flow of water and mud. This report provides necessary coverage of the deficiencies in urban development, the urgent need for stormwater infrastructure, and the cry for help from thousands of Mexicans who fear waking up trapped under the rubble of their own homes.
