His character’s backstory makes next to no sense—mainly because his fans can’t tell if he’s serious or satirical. Over the years, he’s built a diehard fanbase and broken out of the underground with hits like "Life Goes On" and "Miss You." But despite his success, Tree faces a ton of pushback, making it hard to tell if the general public actually likes or dislikes him. That’s exactly why he’s a perfect fit for my world-famous series, The Appeal! This series breaks down controversial or polarizing artists to figure out what makes them so beloved. And after deep-diving into his chaotic discography, I was shocked at how much his music grew on me. Am I maturing as a person, or the opposite? Who knows. But one thing’s for sure—Oliver Tree is a one-of-a-kind artist who we’ll likely never fully understand, and that’s okay.
