In 1892, Gustav Klimt lost his father and his brother Ernst within months of each other. Ernst had been his closest collaborator. After that year, death was no longer a distant idea — it had a face, and it stood close. "Death and Life" was originally painted with a warm, bright background. But after winning first prize in Rome in 1911, Klimt repainted it — dark, cold, empty. Not to make Death frightening. To make Death lonely. The skeleton watches the sleeping, dreaming, intertwined figures of Life from a distance. They don't notice. And Death doesn't seem angry. It seems almost tender — as if it has been watching the warmth of living things for so long that something like longing has taken hold. Klimt himself suffered a stroke in 1918. His last words were: "Send for Emilie" — the woman who had been beside him for most of his life. He died before she arrived. This is not a painting about fear. It is a quiet statement: "You are alive right now. That is beautiful.
