Why Is The UK Refusing To Move An American Ship Packed With 1,400 Tons Of Live Explosives? The SS Richard Montgomery has been sitting in the Thames Estuary since August 1944, when she ran aground and broke apart before her cargo could be offloaded. Roughly 1,400 tons of live American wartime ordnance went down with her — and has never been moved. The wreck sits less than two kilometers from the town of Sheerness. The hull is deteriorating. The exclusion zone is guarded around the clock. And successive British governments have reviewed the situation, commissioned reports, and arrived at the same conclusion: it is safer to leave it there than to attempt removal. Experts have been disagreeing with that conclusion for eighty years.
