The Midsummer festival marks the end of spring and the beginning of high summer. Midsummer Night is the culmination of growth and the complete awekening of nature. It was a Finnish custom to bring trees, branches, herbs and flowers to the yard of dwellings, to prepare a special meal of milk and eggs and to stay awake the whole night playing games, making magic, listening for the future. Lighting a bonfire is the high point of Midsummer night. Originally, bonfires were only part of the eastern Finnish Midsummer celebrations. Nowadays, Midsummer fires are lit all over Finland.
