Çerezlik Ayçiçeğinde Yüksek Verim Nasıl Başlar? | Toprak, Ekim, Sıcaklık (Bilimsel)
Yield loss in snack sunflowers is often discussed in terms of "planting machine" or "seed." However, the reality we see in the field is this: Yields sometimes drop as soon as the crop is planted; because the mistake doesn't start with planting, but with soil management months before planting. This video explains, with scientific results and trials in Turkey, the first step to high yields in snack sunflowers: soil preparation, the three critical conditions at planting time, and why fertilization/other applications without meeting these conditions have limited effects. This video has two main goals: To prepare the soil for planting before planting (the logic of winter preparation) To create the right conditions for the seed on planting day (depth + moisture + temperature) WHAT IS WINTER SOIL PREPARATION AND WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE? Winter soil preparation is the process of preparing the physical structure of the soil for planting through operations such as deep plowing, subsoiler/lowrowing, and stubble management, carried out months before sunflower planting (autumn-early winter). The goal isn't simply to "turn the soil." The real aim is to store winter rainfall in the soil, break up compaction, enable rapid planting in the spring without losing moisture, and provide the right environment for the plant's roots from day one. In fields prepared in winter, rainwater and snowmelt are better filtered without being lost through surface runoff; a natural water reservoir forms in the lower layers. This advantage is particularly critical in non-irrigated (dry) sunflower fields. WHAT IS THE EFFECT ON YIELD? Studies have reported that sunflowers emerge faster, have increased root depth, and withstand drought periods with less stress in fields prepared in winter. Some studies report an 8-15% increase in yield. Deep tillage in winter breaks up the plow pan; allowing the sunflower's taproot to penetrate 40-60 cm deeper more easily. Deep roots mean more water + more nutrients + a larger head. So, what "enlarges the seedbed" is not just fertilizer, but the depth the roots can reach and the access to water and nutrients at that depth. ADVANTAGE OF EARLY AND EVEN SPRING PLANTING In fields prepared in winter, a single tillage in spring is often sufficient. The soil doesn't get dirty, and planting isn't delayed. When planting isn't delayed, the plants emerge simultaneously; when emergence is homogeneous, plant height is balanced, developmental differences are reduced, and pollination occurs more stably. This provides an advantage in both yield and quality uniformity. WEED AND DISEASE PRESSURE Winter tillage can reduce spring emergence by burying many weed seeds deeper. At the same time, a decrease in the pressure of some soil-borne diseases can be observed. In practice, this can mean "less herbicide need" and "a cleaner field". A clean field prevents sunflowers from competing for water and nutrients in the early stages. HOW MANY CM SHOULD SNACK SUNFLOWERS BE PLANTED? (Planting Depth) According to scientific studies, as planting depth increases, emergence time lengthens and seedling vigor decreases. The best emergence and strong plant development are generally obtained at a planting depth of 3–5 cm. In conditions of insufficient soil moisture, 6–7 cm is acceptable; 8 cm and above is not recommended. It has been reported that in areas where planting is done too deeply, emergence time is extended by 30–40%, early root development is weakened, and plant vigor decreases. For a "strong start" in sunflowers, centimeter depth is very critical. WHAT SHOULD THE SEEDBED MOISTURE BE? Sunflower seeds must take approximately 45–50% of their own weight in water from the seedbed to germinate. However, when the soil is too wet, oxygen decreases; germination is delayed or the seed may rot. In trials conducted under Turkish conditions, it has been reported that the emergence rate exceeds 90% when planted in moist soil; the risk of crust formation and rotting increases in excessively wet soil, and irregular and delayed emergence is observed in dry soil. In short, the goal is: "sufficient moisture, but not excessive." *WHAT SHOULD THE SOIL TEMPERATURE BE?* The minimum temperature at which sunflower seeds can germinate is 8°C; however, for rapid and healthy emergence, 10–12°C is required, and for ideal early development, the range of 12–15°C is necessary. In early plantings in cold soil, emergence can take 18–22 days, while in plantings at suitable temperatures, emergence can occur within 7–10 days. This difference directly affects the initial management of the field and the timing of weed control. *SCIENTIFIC RESULT (SUMMARY):* The first step in determining yield in sunflowers is the correct planting depth (4–6 cm range), sufficient but not excessive seedbed moisture, and a soil temperature above 10°C. Fertilization and other applications performed without meeting these three conditions will have limited effectiveness. First, the initi...
