Hayy Ibn Yaqzan ou Vivant fils d'éveillé avec Jean-Baptiste Brenet (30 mai 2021)
On Sunday, May 30, 2021, we had the pleasure of welcoming Jean-Baptiste Brenet for the lecture "Hayy Ibn Yaqzan, or Living Son of the Awakened." You can find his adaptation of Ibn Ṭufayl's Robinson of Guadix here: https://editions-verdier.fr/livre/rob... Following the lecture, Jean-Baptiste Brenet shared his reading recommendations on Arabic philosophy, which you can find at the link below: https://consciencesoufie.com/conseils... Hayy ibn Yaqzan is a man without father or mother, perhaps born spontaneously on an island inhabited by animals. The only human among them, he gradually develops his powers of observation and reasoning to the point of discovering, through reason alone, without revelation, education, apprenticeship, or language, the truth of the entire universe. This unique text is a philosophical tale by the 12th-century Andalusian thinker Ibn Tufayl. The masterpiece captivated learned Europe before being forgotten. While no direct link has been established with Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, published in 1719, it is highly probable that Defoe had access to this text, which was famous in his time. The West has primarily retained the idea of the self-taught philosopher and the concept of the autonomy of human reason. Jean-Baptiste Brenet offers an adaptation—Robinson of Guadix—that reinterprets the narrative and gives voice to the main character. Jean-Baptiste Brenet is a medievalist and professor of Arabic philosophy at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. A specialist in Averroes and his Latin heritage, he works more broadly on Greco-Arabic sources and the "European" legacy of Andalusian thought. He founded and co-directs, with Ch. Grellard, the "Translatio. Medieval Philosophies" series at Vrin. His recent publications include: Je fantasme. Averroès et l’espace potentiel (I Fantasize: Averroes and Potential Space), Lagrasse, Verdier, 2017; La philosophie arabe à l’étude. Sens, limites et défis d’une discipline moderne (Arab Philosophy Under Study: Meaning, Limits, and Challenges of a Modern Discipline), Paris, Vrin, 2019; with A. de Libera and I. Rosier (eds.), Dante et l’averroïsme (Dante and Averroism), Paris, Les Belles Lettres, 2019; and Robinson de Guadix (Robinson of Guadix), Lagrasse, Verdier, 2020.
