In Episode 26 of Season 3 of The Great Controversy — “The Sabbath: The Seal of God” — we follow the surprising story of how the Sabbath became the identifying mark of Seventh-day Adventists and how this doctrine came to be understood within the prophecies of Revelation 13 and 14. The journey begins in Washington, New Hampshire, when Rachel Oakes, a Seventh-day Baptist, challenges Pastor Frederick Wheeler to keep all the commandments — and, in 1844, Wheeler becomes the first Adventist minister to observe the Sabbath. Next, in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, we follow Joseph Bates: the captain who, upon reading an article about the Sabbath, immerses himself in an intense Bible study, accepts the light of the seventh day, and begins to connect it to the sanctuary, the third angel, the seal of God, and the final crisis described in Revelation. Finally, we return to Washington D.C., where prophecy points to the conflict between religious freedom, the union of church and state, and the crucial question of faithfulness to God in the end times: the seal of God vs. the mark of the beast.
