A Poison Weed Took a Million Acres. A Rice-Sized Beetle Took It Back
In the 1940s, a pretty yellow flower was poisoning cattle across the American West — and turning millions of acres of prime grazing land into ground no animal could safely walk. It was called Klamath weed, or Saint John's wort. Ranchers cut it, burned it, and sprayed it for years. They lost. The poison spread, cattle blistered in the sun, and entire valleys of rangeland were written off as worthless. Then, in 1944, scientists tried something no one in North America had ever attempted: they imported the weed's natural enemy — a leaf beetle six millimeters long — from the other side of the world, and set it loose. What that tiny beetle did next, for free and with no one managing it, became one of the most remarkable comebacks in American history. And the strangest twist of all is what that same "poison" plant is sold as today. 🔎 How we work: this channel runs on real places, named researchers, and documented history — not guesswork. Where a number is debated, we say so. 💬 They built a stone monument to a 6-millimeter beetle that saved a million acres. What other unsung species deserves a statue? Tell us below. ================================================= 👉 What do you think of this video?
