If you suddenly hear a wonderful word like "vylysypydysty" in a conversation, it's not necessarily an age-old joke about a word with six "ы" letters. It could simply be a phonetic process occurring in your conversation partner's speech. For linguistics students, the names of these processes—assimilation, dissimilation, accommodation...—merge into a nostalgic song about the first semester... But for me, the magic of these phenomena is that, day after day, millions of people pronounce words, and words, over centuries of history, seem to grind within themselves every fact of their sound.
