Let's discuss poetry translation in its relationship to the original work. Translation, as we know, faces an impossible task: to write (intended) the same poem in another language, and most often, in another time. Is this a task of craft or creativity? Can a translated poem be distinguished from original texts in the same language? If we sense this difference, we approach the essence of poetry: the special relationship between two elements: the linguistic element proper and the non-linguistic element (rhythmic, sound, compositional). This play of "two majorities" (Paul Valéry) is especially significant for 20th-century poetry, modernism, and the avant-garde.
