Markets were weighed down by a renewed rise in oil prices, which at times reached almost $100 per barrel, following attacks on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea that heightened concerns about an escalation of the Middle East conflict. The rising energy prices also drove up yields on US Treasury bonds and fueled speculation about further interest rate hikes by the Fed. The focus, however, is on the reactions to the quarterly results of the major technology companies: Alphabet exceeded expectations for revenue and profit, particularly shining with 82 percent cloud growth, but raised its forecast for AI investments in 2026 to $195 billion to $205 billion, which is impacting free cash flow and putting pressure on the stock. Tesla significantly missed profit expectations, is suffering from declining margins and negative free cash flow, while Elon Musk dampened expectations for Optimus and Robotaxis. In contrast, ServiceNow provided relief to the recently under-pressure software sector with strong figures and an increased annual forecast. The picture in the semiconductor sector remains mixed: Texas Instruments impressed with strong results and a robust outlook, while STMicroelectronics disappointed with a cautious outlook despite good quarterly results.
