The first bombing raids on cities were carried out during the Great War. However, the first theoretical studies on aerial warfare began after the end of hostilities. In Italy, General Giulio Douhet recognized its potential: for him, aviation was the only weapon capable of rapidly resolving a conflict, bombing military targets as well as cities to undermine the population's morale. These theses gained widespread support everywhere, and in the Second World War, following the advances made by aviation in the 1930s, they found their fullest application. What happened in Dresden in February 1945 was the culmination of an escalation of terror that had begun with the German bombing of Warsaw in September 1939.
