O Que Aconteceu com Ela Depois da Abolição? | Princesa Isabel

Princess Isabel died without ever setting foot in Brazil again. She spent 32 years in exile, in a castle in Normandy, after being banished with only 24 hours' notice. Isabel signed the Golden Law at age 41, in May 1888—and 18 months later, in the middle of the night, she secretly boarded the steamer Alagoas, along with Dom Pedro II, Teresa Cristina, the Count d'Eu, and their three children. What happened to Princess Isabel after Abolition is one of the most complex and least told stories of Imperial Brazil—a succession of personal losses, exile in a foreign land, and a coffin that took half a century to cross the Atlantic. A story that begins in 1889 and only ends in 1971, spanning three continents, two world wars, and the almost complete silence of Brazilian republican historiography.
