Motivation Psychology in Practice

Presentation Overview This presentation looks at ways to boost motivation using two main psychological theories: Expectancy-Value Theory and Causal Attribution Theory. It shows that people feel more motivated when they believe they can succeed, see value in what they are doing, and think their actions can make a difference. 1. Expectancy-Value Theory The presentation explains that motivation depends on two main things: Expectancy – “Can I do this?” Value – “Why should I do this?” If either expectancy or value is low, motivation tends to drop. The author shares a personal story about helping their son become more motivated to read. They tried things like choice boards, rewards, reading challenges, breaking assignments into smaller parts, routines, and visual schedules. These steps helped their son get more involved and feel less frustrated, but rewards by themselves did not lead to lasting motivation. This experience showed how important it is to build confidence, make tasks meaningful, offer support, and celebrate small wins. 2. Causal Attribution Theory Next, the presentation looks at how the way people explain their successes or failures can shape their future motivation. Attribution theory focuses on: Locus (internal vs. external causes) Stability (stable vs. changeable causes) Control (controllable vs. uncontrollable causes) The presentation encourages helping people move away from thinking that outcomes are fixed or out of their control. Instead, it suggests showing that effort and good strategies can make a difference. Feedback should highlight effort and the ways people approach tasks, not just the final results. Real-World Applications: The author brings these theories to life by sharing several personal experiences: Supporting a son with reading motivation. Helping a friend increase motivation for healthy eating and weight loss. Encouraging a nephew to develop a growth-oriented mindset while learning games. Supporting a father’s recovery after heart surgery by reinforcing independence, celebrating progress, and focusing on controllable factors. Key Takeaway The main takeaway is that motivation can change. When we understand why someone is struggling, help them build confidence, show them the value in what they are doing, and focus on effort and things they can control, we can help them become more motivated and successful. This is true for educators, parents, and caregivers. Overall, this presentation stands out because it connects theory to real-life experiences in parenting, teaching, caregiving, and coaching.
