It is, therefore, the direction of the vessel's movement when sailing. 👉Head: It is the direction to which the ship is pointing at a given instant. Due to the influence of sea conditions, the direction in which one sails varies around the desired course. We said that COURSE (R) and HEAD are taken in relation to a reference direction. This reference direction, in general, can be three: 🟩True North – is the geographic north of the earth 🟩Magnetic North – a needle without deviation points to magnetic north. 🟩North of the Needle - A needle that is deflected due to the nearby magnetic field will point not to Magnetic North, but to North of the Needle. However, the North that interests the navigator is the true North, that is, the one that starts the counting of the compass rose (000º). True North (Nv) is the geographic north of the earth. It is the north contained in Nautical Charts, and the one that interests the navigator. 👉Bearings - are angles measured between a reference direction and the line of sight of a given sighted object (also called a target).
