1956: Screen Legend GENE KELLY Interview | Picture Parade | Classic Movie Interviews | BBC Archive
Peter Haigh has a brief chat with Hollywood legend Gene Kelly. Topics covered include how Kelly got started in show business as a choreographer, and only became an actor when nobody would hire him as a choreographer. Haigh also asks him about his particular dancing style, and how it developed from his early days of classical and ballet dancing. Gene Kelly's ambitious new film Invitation To The Dance is a film he has wanted to make for a long time - one about dancers for dancers, where dancers can show the full extent of their skills without having to worry about dramatic acting or dialogue. Clip taken from Picture Parade, originally broadcast on BBC Television, 4 September, 1956. NB: The audio track in this clip was severely degraded. The sound quality is poor, but as good as we could make it.
