Loire-Nieuport LN.401: The Plane France Didn’t Believe
The Loire-Nieuport LN.401 was France’s delayed answer to the German Stuka. Despite having decent flight characteristics and heavy armament, the aircraft was crippled by decisions made long before it ever took off. French WW1-era generals saw no use for dive bombers, and designers somehow forgot to add armor to a plane meant to fly straight into enemy anti-aircraft fire. When the 1940 invasion began, the few existing LN.401s and LN.411s were thrown into combat against the Luftwaffe, sometimes surviving only because of their striking visual resemblance to the Ju-87. #ww2aviation #divebomber #frenchairforce #militaryhistory
