Hakone Yumoto is a hot spring resort that has long welcomed travelers and those seeking therapeutic baths, serving as the gateway to the seven hot springs of Hakone. Located close to the Tokaido road, it was a popular resting place for travelers during the Edo period. Among these, Bansuirou Fukuzumi, founded in 1625, is one of the few family-run inns in Hakone that continues to operate. It has long been known as a renowned inn, as evidenced by the Hakone palanquin bearer's song, "For the night, will you stay in Hakone or Mishima, or Fukuzumi in Yumoto?" Its development was supported by the 10th generation owner, Masae Fukuzumi, in the early Meiji era. He studied under Ninomiya Sontoku and not only revived the Fukuzumi of the time but also contributed significantly to the development of Hakone. He can be considered a key figure in the modernization of Hakone. He had a close relationship with Yukichi Fukuzawa, and Fukuzawa's theories, developed through discussions with Masanori, also had a significant influence on the development of Hakone itself. It can be said that Fukuzumi is a leading inn in Hakone Yumoto, an area with many long-established inns. After the reconstruction of Fukuzumi, Masanori built "Bansuiro" and "Kinzenro." These innovative pseudo-Western style buildings, blending Western architecture with traditional Japanese sukiya-zukuri style, were the first hot spring inns to be designated as important national cultural properties. Due to his high level of expertise and connections, many important figures of the Meiji era, such as Takayoshi Kido, Hirobumi Ito, and Takamori Saigo, stayed at Fukuzumi. It is also known that Takayoshi Kido bestowed the name "Bansuirou" upon the inn. Furthermore, it is known as the first inn where Tokugawa Yoshinobu stayed, and there is even a story that the word "ryokan" was first used at Fukuzumi. It can be said that it is one of the most influential inns in the Japanese inn industry. It was an irresistible feeling to imagine politicians and cultural figures conversing and interacting at this inn during the fervent era of the Meiji Restoration and modernization. This time, I stayed in Room 15 of the Bansuirou, the inn's signature room. The distinctive coffered ceiling is adorned with 48 paintings depicting flowers, birds, wind, and the moon. The pillars, made from natural wood such as Yakusugi cedar and ebony, and the subtly curved fittings that follow the curves of the pillars, beautifully showcase the high level of craftsmanship of the time. All the hot springs are free-flowing from the source. More than 160 liters of water gush out naturally every minute, and the soft texture, sometimes called "silk floss," is full of the gentleness characteristic of Hakone Yumoto. The meals are authentic Japanese cuisine incorporating seasonal ingredients from Hakone and Sagami Bay. Each dish is carefully prepared, and the gentle flavors, enhanced by the umami of the broth, were truly comforting. The dining experience, enjoyed while surrounded by historic architecture, is also one of the important charms of this inn. The architecture, the hot springs, and the memories of the people who shaped modern Japan—Bansuirou Fukuzumi offers a feeling of staying in the very essence of Japanese inn culture.
