Vom Wartburg 311 zum 1.3 - Vom Traumauto zum Ladenhüter
#wartburg #documentary #gdr From the Wartburg 311 to the Wartburg 1.3. This documentary traces the development of a car brand that shaped the East German streetscape for decades. The story begins in 1953. In Eisenach, under difficult conditions, automobile production is rebuilt. The IFA F9 is created, a vehicle whose roots lie in the pre-war era – yet it lays the foundation for everything that will follow. With the Wartburg 311, the company finally takes the step towards an independent vehicle. Within a very short time, a complete model range is developed, from everyday cars to special versions such as the coupé, camper van, and utility vehicle. In the mid-1960s, the Wartburg 312 represents an intermediate step in its development, before the Wartburg 353 ushers in the next major stage. With a more modern design, improved chassis, and clean lines, it becomes the most famous model in the series. But the Wartburg isn't just an everyday car. It also becomes an important export product of East Germany. While domestic demand remains high, leading to long waiting lists, the Wartburg becomes a comparatively affordable option abroad, bringing much-needed foreign currency into the country. With increasing demands regarding fuel consumption and emissions, the two-stroke engine concept comes under growing pressure. International standards and changing markets necessitate further development. At the end of the 1980s, the Wartburg 1.3 finally marks the switch to a four-stroke engine. This step was technically long overdue but coincided with a period of fundamental change. With the political changes and the opening of markets, the Wartburg quickly loses its significance. On April 10, 1991, the last vehicle rolls off the assembly line at the Eisenach automotive plant. This documentary traces the development from beginning to end – between technical ambitions, economic constraints, and the unique conditions of East Germany.
