Vulcanesti is one of three cities in Gagauzia and the southernmost city in Moldova. For many years, it developed at the crossroads of different civilizations, absorbing a little from each. So today, I'll drive along Romanian cobblestones to take a selfie next to a monument to the Soviet leader, sample Turkish cheese at a local sheepfold, and homemade wine in a typical Gagauz cellar. I'll also fly a drone over a Turkmen kindergarten, learn the origins of a huge monument to the Russian army in these parts, and what a vast Ukrainian lake looks like from above. I'll also show you the remains of the great wall with which the Romans fenced themselves off from barbarians 2,000 years ago, and a red canyon where mammoths grazed in ancient times, and where sheep now peacefully graze. Eventually, they'll tell me why the local cemetery has hundreds of unmarked stones instead of monuments, and why the Gagauz have been drinking wine since early childhood. Let's go! Due south! Vulcanesti is 180 kilometers from Chisinau, due south, and along the way we pass almost all of Gagauzia. I expected the trees to be greener in the south, but it's not very noticeable. Another thing is that as we move across the steppe, we increasingly see sheep and crows nesting. The southern sun literally vaporizes the fields before our eyes, and the winds here are so strong that they bend power line pylons. Horses and walk-behind tractors give way to donkeys closer to Gagauzia, and the asphalt ends about 20 kilometers before Vulcanesti.
