As the Jewish Passover drew near, Jesus went up to the Temple in Jerusalem. However, the temple courtyard, which should have been a place of prayer and worship, was filled with people selling oxen, sheep, and doves for sacrifice, money changers exchanging money, and the sounds of bargaining and coins. Jesus made a whip of cords and sent the sheep and oxen out of the temple. After pouring out the money changers' cash and overturning their tables, He spoke clearly: “Take these things away from here.” “Do not make my Father’s house a house of commerce.” This story follows the cleansing of the temple recorded in John chapter 2. Jesus’ anger was not an emotion born of feeling disregarded. It was a holy zeal directed at a reality where God’s house was obscured by greed, transactions, and formalities, and where people had lost their way to approach God. When people asked by what authority He was doing this, Jesus said: “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will rebuild it.” People thought of the temple built of stone, but Jesus was pointing to His own body, which would die and rise again on the third day. Although the disciples did not fully understand those words at the time, after Jesus’ resurrection, they remembered and believed those words from that day. The story of the cleansing of the temple prompts us to reflect on our hearts today as well. It makes us examine whether worry has taken the place of prayer, whether greed and comparison have replaced love, and whether our faith remains merely a familiar formality rather than a relationship of loving God. Jesus is not one who overturns the tables of our hearts to tear us down. He is one who removes our wrong center to rebuild us into a place of true worship toward God.
