The Pillars of the Earth, based on the novel by Ken Follett, was designed by Michael Rieneck and Stefan Stadler and published by Kosmos in 2006. This ho-hum so-common game description hides a unique take on worker placement, with a random worker order and a decreasing cost to place. My worker came out early, but it's really expensive. Should I bite the bullet and pay top dollar to get that sweet spot? Or pass, so later I can place for free... but maybe by that time there aren't any good spots left. The Pillars of the Earth came out after Caylus and before Agricola, when worker-placement was new and exciting but wasn't yet a defined genre. In this window, there were a number of creative variations on what would later become a pretty common and standard game mechanism.
