KB2024 - Long - Kaihoka Lakes

Kings Birthday series is an annual orienteering carnival - this year in Tasman, at the very top of the South Island - sunniest spot in New Zealand. The Long was at a private farm at Kaihoka Lakes at the very northern tip of the South Island - a new map and possibly one of the most stunning coastal areas in New Zealand. If you miss your catching feature, you end up in Australia. More karst rock features, rolling hills, massive sand dunes... lots of vertical - 300m for my course, over 600 for the younger ones. This location is a once in a lifetime. Taking it slow for the first few controls to the beach, then ran right past control 6 - bad control. Got back into the vibe, but over-ran 11. My GoPro battery ran out just before control 14 - which was really bad - I mispunched - game over (and you don't get to see me make a hash of it..) M40AS - 4 km, 17 controls - thanks to Neil, Julian, the farm owners and of course Nelson Orienteering Club Headcam orienteering
