Double Headed Steam Storms the Trunk - The Main Trunk Steam Spectacular

On Saturday the 21st June, as part of the FRONZ50 celebrations, a rare excursion took place on the North Island Main Trunk Line. Steam Incorporated’s locomotives Ab 608 and Ja 1271 double-headed the largest steam excursion of its kind in New Zealand since 2008, known as the “Main Trunk Steam Spectacular.” Carrying more than 500 passengers in a 14-car train, the journey ran to Ohakune and return. The train was initially hauled between Paekākāriki and Palmerston North by Glenbrook Vintage Railway’s diesel locomotives DC 4818 and DBR 1254, before Ab 608 and Ja 1271 took charge for the main trip. Enjoy!
