[Anchor] These days, automated machines have become commonplace in everything from banks to restaurants. While using them, many people find them convenient. However, machines designed for the disabled have not been distributed alongside them, leading to reports that they are actually facing reverse discrimination. To mark the 18th anniversary of the implementation of the Disability Discrimination Act, reporter Baek Yu-jin investigated the current situation. [Report] No Ji-seong, 33, has a brain lesion disability. He visited a bank ATM, but it is difficult to see the screen while seated in a wheelchair. The same applies to the automated machine at the cafe where he went to buy coffee. When he adjusted the screen settings to match the eye level of a wheelchair user, he could not see photos and could not press the order quantity button. Because that kind of functionality isn't supported at all in low-profile mode..."] Although unmanned machines have already become commonplace in cafes and restaurants, it is difficult to find ones designed for use by people with disabilities. Because they are two to three times more expensive than standard models, even large franchises are reluctant to install them. Barrier-free kiosks became fully mandatory starting January 28 of this year. However, small business owners and workplaces smaller than 50 square meters were excluded from the requirement. Disability advocacy groups argue that although 18 years have passed since the Disability Discrimination Act came into effect, it is difficult to feel any tangible changes in the field. From ordering food to purchasing boarding passes and issuing various documents, the spread of unmanned systems is actually becoming a new constraint for people with disabilities.
