Moving to Canada as a Doctor or Healthcare Worker

Tod Maffin speaks with Dr. Robert Beck as he shares his journey of moving from the United States to Canada as a physician. NOTE: The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) establishes permission to practice a medical specialty in Canada (that means almost all fields outside of family medicine). The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) is for family doctors including those who have special areas of focus (sports medicine, elder care, palliative care and emergency medicine [it's complicated - both of these can be certified through CFPC or RCPSC ], addiction medicine, etc). It's a little complex and every province & health authority have some of their own rules about what training, licensure, exams etc Family physicians do not have to go through the Royal College to get licenced in Canada. That organization is irrelevant for about half of practicing physicians. -------------- His YouTube channel is ‪@InterestingMD‬ He discusses the motivations behind the move, the processes involved in obtaining a job and work permit, and the complexities of medical licensing in Canada. Dr. Beck highlights the role of HealthMatch in facilitating the transition and provides insights into the path to permanent residency. He reflects on the timeline of the move and offers advice for other doctors considering a similar journey. In this conversation, Dr. Robert Beck shares his insights on the Canadian healthcare system, his experiences living on Vancouver Island, and the differences in safety and education compared to the United States. He discusses the pros and cons of the healthcare system, the beauty of his new home, and the political climate in Canada. Dr. Beck also highlights the importance of community engagement through his podcast and YouTube channel, where he shares valuable information about healthcare and life in Canada. TAKEAWAYS: The licensing process in Canada has become more accessible for U.S. doctors. Permanent residency can be achieved faster than expected. The Provincial Nominee Program offers significant advantages for immigration. The experience of moving is unique and varies for each individual. The Canadian healthcare system has simplified billing processes for doctors. Living in Canada offers a sense of safety that was lacking in the U.S. Education costs in Canada are significantly lower than in the U.S. Dr. Beck appreciates the lack of insurance company battles in Canada. Vancouver Island is a beautiful place with rich wildlife. The political climate in Canada feels less divisive compared to the U.S. Dr. Beck's podcast serves as a platform for community engagement. He emphasizes the importance of patient care over administrative tasks. The healthcare system in Canada is not without its flaws, but it has many advantages. Dr. Beck encourages others to consider moving to Canada for a better work-life balance.
