Aquaculture. Farming of Buenos Aires silversides.
Leandro Miranda is one of the leading experts on fish farming in Argentina. In this interview, he discusses the research he leads at the Ichthyophysiology and Aquaculture Laboratory of the Chascomús Technological Institute (INTECH). He focuses particularly on the Buenos Aires silverside (pejerrey), about which little was known 20 years ago when he began studying it. The knowledge he has generated now allows him to intensively raise silversides and also explains why fishing in the Chascomús lagoon is no longer attractive, among other initiatives. __ TIMESTAMPS 00:00 Introduction 00:13 Reproduction and rearing of the Buenos Aires silverside 00:41 Experimentation in animal facilities 00:55 How does a fish reproduce? 01:23 Intensive breeding of silverside in the laboratory and in the lagoon 01:51 Study of the influence of environmental stressors on the natural reproduction of fish 02:23 Monitoring of water bodies: from Chascomús to Bahía Blanca 03:43 Detection of hermaphrodite silverside in the province of Buenos Aires 04:11 Need for regulations for the creation of protected areas 05:00 Advances in fish reproduction in captivity 06:32 Basic studies for knowledge production 05:15 What is the state of the silverside population in the Chascomús lagoon? 06:54 15 years of experimental work + mathematical models + data on reproductive physiology 08:07 Why are there fewer silverside in the Chascomús lagoon? 9:33 Fish Reproductive Facility 10:01 Open Water Circulation Systems 11:30 Settling Tanks 11:58 Closed System Tanks 12:50 INTECH's Growth Since its Incorporation into UNSAM ___ #aquaculture #fish #silverside #farming #reproduction #ecology #biotechnology #food #protein #development #transfer #UNSAM #CONICET #Chascomús #INTECH #EByN #buenosaires #bonaerense
