The design follows the path taken with the Z900RS: The basis is a modern naked bike – in this case, the Z650 – which is converted into a vintage bike with many beautiful and sophisticated parts. Like the modern naked bike, the Z650RS is powered by the high-revving, liquid-cooled 649 cc inline twin, which is also used in the Ninja 650. In the case of the Z650RS, the engine is said to be tuned for good responsiveness in the low and mid-range rev ranges as well as the characteristic, invigorating power in the upper rev range. Like the Z650, it produces 68 hp (50.2 kW) and can be throttled down to an A2-compliant 35 kW (48 hp) at Kawasaki dealers if necessary.
