Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare | Background, Summary, Characters and Themes

Hello students. Today we will study Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare. It is one of his most famous and most loved comedies. It was written around 1601 or 1602, during the period known as the Elizabethan Age in England. This play explores deep human emotions such as love, identity, and desire. The title Twelfth Night refers to the twelfth night after Christmas. In Shakespeare’s time, that night was the end of a long Christmas celebration. People celebrated it with plays, music, dancing, and laughter. It was a time when normal rules were ignored. Servants could pretend to be masters. Men could dress as women, and women as men. People could act foolishly and no one would mind. Shakespeare used this spirit of fun and confusion to build his play. Summary of Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare. The play begins with the sound of music. Duke Orsino, the ruler of Illyria, is sitting in his palace. He is deeply in love with Lady Olivia, a rich noblewoman. He listens to music and says, “If music be the food of love, play on”. This means he wants music to feed his love the way food feeds hunger. But Orsino is not truly in love with Olivia herself but in love with the idea of being in love. His feelings are poetic, but not realistic. Meanwhile, a shipwreck has occurred near the coast of Illyria. A young woman named Viola survives, but she is separated from her twin brother Sebastian. She believes that Sebastian has drowned. Viola is sad and alone in a strange land. To protect herself, she decides to disguise herself as a young man. She takes the name Cesario and goes to serve Duke Orsino. Orsino quickly likes Cesario because Cesario is clever and gentle. He trusts him. Orsino sends Cesario to Olivia to deliver his love messages. But when Viola, disguised as Cesario, meets Olivia, something unexpected happens. Olivia falls in love with Cesario! She does not know Cesario is actually Viola, a woman in disguise. Now the story becomes more complicated. Viola secretly loves Orsino, but cannot tell him because he thinks she is a man. Olivia loves Cesario, who is actually Viola. And Orsino loves Olivia, who rejects him. So, there is a triangle of love where everyone loves someone who does not love them back. While this is happening, there is another funny story going on inside Olivia’s house. Olivia has a relative named Sir Toby Belch. He is a loud, drunken, and funny man. He stays in Olivia’s house and drinks all the time. He has a foolish friend named Sir Andrew Aguecheek, who also wants to marry Olivia, but he is silly and cowardly. Together, they make mischief. Sir Toby and others decide to play a cruel joke on Olivia’s steward, Malvolio with the help of Olivia’s clever maid, Maria. They write a fake love letter and pretend that Olivia has written it. The letter tells Malvolio to wear yellow stockings and cross garters, to smile constantly, and to act proud. When Malvolio does all these things, Olivia thinks he has gone mad and he is locked up. Later, Viola’s twin brother Sebastian arrives in Illyria. He was alive all along. He looks exactly like Viola, which creates more confusion. Olivia meets Sebastian and thinks he is Cesario. She marries him. When Viola and Sebastian are finally seen together, everyone realizes the truth. At the end, Viola’s true identity is revealed. Orsino realizes that Cesario is actually Viola and that she loves him. He asks her to marry him. Olivia remains married to Sebastian. Malvolio, however, is angry and humiliated when he learns that the letter was a trick. He swears revenge. The play ends with joy and harmony for most characters. The twin siblings are reunited. Two marriages take place. Music plays again, and the fool Feste sings the last song. But the ending is not completely happy, because Malvolio leaves bitterly. Shakespeare reminds us that comedy and sadness often exist together in life. Conclusion. Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare is not just a romantic comedy. It is a study of human nature. It shows how people search for love, identity, and happiness. It mixes laughter with sadness and creates a world where both men and women learn what love truly means. The play leaves us with hope. It tells us that even in confusion, truth can be found. Even in disguise, love can be real. And even in sadness, there can be laughter.
