Indonesian Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka is on a working visit to Sumatra Island this week. His first visit was to Lampung Province on Wednesday (July 15th), and he is scheduled to continue on to South Sumatra Province (Sumsel) on Thursday (July 16th). During his visit to Lampung, Gibran admitted that every time he visits the region, he often receives complaints about damaged roads. He said that infrastructure issues are a primary public aspiration, which he will bring to the central government for action. "When I go to Lampung, my complaint is always about roads. We will consult with the leadership about infrastructure issues, cassava issues, and so on, so that Lampung receives special attention," Gibran said during a dialogue with residents and farmers in Hamlet III, Muara Jaya Village, Sukadana District, East Lampung, last Wednesday, as quoted by detikSumbagsel. According to Gibran, the road issue should not become an arena for blame between the provincial government and the district/city governments, including the central government. He said each region has budget constraints, necessitating central government intervention. "I don't think the issue of roads and asphalt needs to be passed on to the governor or regent. Each region has budgetary and fiscal limitations," said the eldest son of the seventh Indonesian President, Joko Widodo (Jokowi). Therefore, Gibran ensured that the central government would collaborate with local governments to expedite repairs to road sections deemed crucial for public mobility and economic activity. "We will try to prioritize road sections that truly need repair, especially those that support economic activity," he said. During the visit, Gibran also inspected the Way Bungur Bridge, which has been damaged since 2016. He expressed concern that for years, residents, including students, had to cross the river by boat due to the blocked access. Gibran to South Sumatra Meanwhile, preparations in South Sumatra are well underway by local government officials to welcome Gibran to three locations in the province, especially Palembang. Gibran is scheduled for a two-day working visit to South Sumatra, July 15-16, 2026. He will visit three locations. After staying overnight in Palembang following his working visit from Lampung, Gibran is scheduled to visit Siti Fatimah Regional Hospital (RSUD), inspect the construction of the Musi V Bridge on the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road (JTTS), and the Keramasan Waste and Energy (PSEL) facility today.
