SPAIN-CORONA AFFAIR: At the end of June 2026, Spain's Supreme Court sentenced former Transport Minister José Luis Ábalos to 24 years and three months in prison for his involvement in a serious corruption scandal during the COVID-19 pandemic. The former minister was accused of establishing a criminal network to procure overpriced medical protective equipment during the pandemic and accepting bribes in the process. In the same trial, his former advisor Koldo García was also sentenced to 19 years in prison.
