Makovica. Zborov Castle. Makovica. Šariš. The Kamenec River. Slovakia. Slovensko. A former defensive castle, now in ruins, located in the historic Šariš region in northeastern Slovakia. The castle was built, perhaps as early as the second half of the 13th century, or at the latest, at the beginning of the 14th century, as a Hungarian royal fortress guarding the ancient trade route from Hungary to Poland. The first mention of it dates back to 1347. Originally, it consisted only of a small residential palace, a chapel, and a quadrangular tower of the last defense (donjon), connected by a perimeter wall enclosing a small, triangular courtyard.
