How did Ntare V become king of Nkore (Ankole)? It was not through a peaceful succession, but after one of the bloodiest civil wars in the kingdom's history. Following the death of Omugabe Mutambuka, rival princes fought for the throne in a brutal dynastic struggle marked by assassinations, betrayal, shifting alliances and fierce battles. The conflict claimed the lives of leading Bahinda princes, including Rukongyi, Makumbi, Mukwenda and Muhikira, while the infamous Kabula Massacre decimated one faction through treachery.
