Although the rupiah continues to experience pressure, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa is optimistic that the rupiah will remain under control going forward. When asked about the results of the Ministry of Finance's "stress test" simulation for the rupiah's weakening, Purbaya emphasized that the Ministry of Finance has carried out thorough calculations, including taking into account the continuously rising global oil prices. Purbaya added that the government has taken various measures to keep the rupiah's volatility under control, one of which is through intervention in the bond market. Responding to the rupiah's continued weakening against the US dollar, Purbaya stated that this is unreasonable given Indonesia's sound economic fundamentals. To prevent the rupiah from further collapsing, the government will issue strict regulations starting June 1. Through Government Regulations Number 2 and 21 of 2026, exporters from the natural resources and non-oil and gas sectors are required to deposit 100 percent of their foreign exchange proceeds (DHE) in domestic banks. The dollar must be locked in for 12 months. Therefore, if there is an abundance of dollars domestically, the dollar price will fall and the rupiah will strengthen. Not only from a fiscal perspective, but also from a monetary perspective, Bank Indonesia has also sounded the alarm by raising its benchmark interest rate, the BI Rate, to 5.25 percent. The goal is to encourage foreign investors to keep their money in Indonesia and to protect the rupiah from the impact of the conflict in the Middle East. BI predicts the rupiah will strengthen again in July and August. Responding to the government's policy to strengthen the rupiah, economists believe it must start by addressing the underlying problem, namely the growing number of poor people.
