The Sahara Desert occupies a vast part of the African continent, a third of its total area, estimated at 9.4 million km². Most of this area receives little to no rainfall and appears as compacted earth, in addition to the areas of fine sand and dunes that make up the landscape we all picture. This might lead us to wonder… what lies beneath all that sand? The obvious answer is that sooner or later we would find rocks, but from there… the results can be surprising.
