"You Are There: The Boston Massacre" - March 5, 1770 - Classic 1955 TV story
On March 5, 1770, nine British soldiers shot into a crowd, killing three people and mortally wounding two more, during a chaotic scene on King Street in Boston. The event, which would come to be known as the Boston Massacre, would be used to turn colonists against King George III's rule. The crowd of three or four hundred who were harassing them verbally and throwing various projectiles led to an event that was heavily publicized as "a massacre" by leading Patriots such as Paul Revere and Samuel Adams. In this story, introduced by Walter Cronkite - Royal Governor Hutchison forbids the British troops by firing on the angry colonists despite the harassment they receive thereby changing the course of history. This episode first aired on October 2, 1955.
