Life Beside the Tracks: Blue Mountains Gatekeepers Cottages

Along the early Blue Mountains railway line, small sandstone cottages once stood beside level crossings, home to the gatekeepers who controlled the movement of road traffic across the tracks. Built during the 1860s as part of the first railway over the mountains engineered by John Whitton, these cottages formed an essential part of the railway’s operation. In this video we explore the surviving gatekeeper’s cottages, stories around them and the families who lived and worked beside the railway. Update - the Bowenfels cottage featured in this video is incorrect. The one shown is possibly the Station Master's house. The gatekeeper's house can be found at the southern end of Fullagar Ave. Subscribe to see more places and learn about stories from this region and beyond. ☕️🍻 Your support is much appreciated, and I'd never turn it down if you bought me a coffee or shouted me a beer! https://buymeacoffee.com/the.bygones Thanks for dropping by! #BlueMountainsHistory #AustralianRailwayHistory #NSWRailways #JohnWhitton #HistoricNSW #ColonialAustralia #HiddenHistory #ExploreNSW #BlueMountainsNSW #BlueMountainsDrone #GatekeepersHouses #RailwayGatekeepers
