Shrek is a phenomenon, loved by 11 out of 10 animation fans, and highly acclaimed by casual viewers as well. With the reboot in the hands of the Minions studio on the way, how about we analyze the impact the film had not only on pop culture but on the animation industry and how it works to this day? From the beginning, the adventure of Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona had everything to go very wrong, from the abrupt death of actor Chris Farley, who was to play the ogre and had already recorded more than 90% of his lines, to the behind-the-scenes drama involving an EPIC feud with Disney and the egos of millionaire Hollywood executives, which makes Mean Girls look like child's play. Fueled by the hatred of producer Jeffrey Katzenberg – a former Disney employee and largely responsible for some of the biggest animated films of the 90s like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King – he left Disney vowing revenge, founded DreamWorks, and the result is 90 minutes of venom, irreverence, and pure hatred against the mouse. Did you know, for example, that the villain Lord Farquaad looks EXACTLY like former Disney president Michael Eisner? And that the fact that the character is a dwarf and Duloc looks like Disney is a bizarre shade aimed at him too? But the impact of Shrek goes far beyond just jokes and parodies of the classic Disney formula: did you know that we only have, for example, the ending of Frozen with the representation of true love through the sisters Anna and Elsa because of Shrek's subversive ending? Or that self-parodies of Disney itself, like Enchanted, only exist thanks to the ogre?
