Of the five types of private sleeping compartments available on the Sunrise Express, the cheapest is the B-class Solo compartment. At 6,600 yen, it's 1,100 yen cheaper than the B-class Single compartment, which is the most common type of private sleeping compartment on the Sunrise Express. There are 20 of these compartments located in the third car from the Izumo/Takamatsu end. Originally, the B-class Solo compartment was developed to improve the service level of the open-plan B-class sleeping compartments on Blue Trains during the final years of Japanese National Railways (JNR). It was offered at the same price as the open-plan B-class compartments and was first introduced on the Hokutosei sleeper express (Ueno-Sapporo) in 1988, coinciding with the opening of the Seikan Tunnel. Later, more Blue Trains in the Kyushu region began equipping their trains with Solo compartments. The type of Solo compartment currently used on the Sunrise Express, with a central aisle and compartments arranged above, below, and to the sides, was first introduced on the Akebono sleeper express (Ueno-Aomori). To further enhance the service level compared to the Blue Train, the Sunrise Express was designed with most of its B-class sleeping berths as singles. However, because the Sunrise Express is a sleeper train, it requires motors. Therefore, the cars equipped with motors have cheaper solo or reserved "Nobinobi" seats instead of singles (some single private rooms are available).
