Intel Core i7 4790 Delid & Repair - Overheating & Thermal Throttling IHS Paste Fix - Haswell 4th Gen

In this video I repair an Intel Core i7 4790 processor that I was sent by a friend. This is a 4th generation Haswell architecture based Intel CPU and these use thermal compound / paste to attach the IHS (Integrated Heat Spreader) to the CPU die. It can be a common problem with this series for the paste to go bad which causes overheating, resulting in thermal throttling and reduced performance. However there is a solution to the problem luckily enough, by renewing the internal thermal compound/paste. This is my first ever attempt at a processor delid. I'd never done this before so took my time and figured why not document it along the way in the hopes I may help someone else who has the same issue. The delid tool I purchased from Amazon UK and is specific to the 4th Gen Intel CPU series, I think they are somewhat universal within reason, but do check compatibility before you attempt this with 'just any tool off the shelf'. Also PLEASE do not just attempt to do this to any CPU without doing any research first. Check if the chip you have actually has thermal paste/compound inside it first and can be delid easily enough. Some processors have a soldered on heat spreader, which would crack the CPU die and kill it if you attempted to delid in this way. I would also only ever advise trying this if you are actually having thermal / temperature problems with a bad processor. Most average users would receive little benefit from performing a delid if the processor is already performing well and operating at a reasonable temperature.
