Welcome to another flash tip from Engehall. In today's lesson we're going to talk about three things that many people don't know about the beloved and widely used PP CABLES! First thing: Do you know why it's called PP? Second thing: Do you still have doubts about what a PP cable is and what a multi-core cable is? Third thing: What is the difference between a 500V PP and a 0.6/1kV PP? Well, starting from the beginning then: Why is this cable called PP? The designation PP comes from the abbreviation of the material used in both the insulation and the cable sheathing, which is polyvinyl chloride, better known as PVC. If we analyze a PP cable in detail, we can see that around the conductive part, in this case the copper, there is a first layer of PVC; this is the actual insulation of the cable, it protects the conductive part. The outer layer, this black one here, is what we call the sheathing; it doesn't have the function of insulating, but rather of protecting the insulation of the conductors inside. So, basically, the first P in the abbreviation indicates that the insulation is PVC, and the second P indicates that the sheathing is also PVC, okay? Great, but what's the difference between a multi-core and a PP cable, André? Well, a multi-core cable is composed of the conductor, which is the conductive part, the insulation of this conductor, and the sheathing of the insulated conductors. Therefore, the multi-core conductor is also a PP cable, as it has PVC insulation and sheathing. And the PP cable is also a multi-core conductor, since it has more than one insulated conductor covered by its sheathing. So my dear, have no more doubts from now on, any multi-core cable can also be called a PP cable. However, the similarity between them ends here, and that's where the third thing you may not know comes in. The cable popularly called PP is a cable that has an insulation voltage of 500V. The multi-core conductor, on the other hand, is required to have an insulation voltage of 0.6/1KV. So the multi-core is like a more "reinforced" PP, don't worry, I'll explain in the practical application! The 500V PP cable should be used almost exclusively for powering household appliances and portable power tools. We can even see that these cables are more flexible on the outside, more malleable. This is because its insulation is simpler and the function of the outer sheath is only mechanical protection. Furthermore, this type of cable must comply with the Mercosur standard NBR NM 247-5. Multicore PP 0.6/1KV cables, on the other hand, are used in electrical installations, such as in trays, whether perforated or not, in cable ladders, and in cable ducts and profiles. These cables can also be installed in conduits (embedded or not), buried directly in the ground, or even embedded directly in masonry, as authorized by NBR 5410 in its table 33. In other words, this type of cable can be used in permanent electrical installations, while the other cannot. The standard prohibits the use of PP 500V cable in permanent installations, as stated in note 6.2.3.2: “Cables conforming to NBR 13249 are not permitted in the installation methods foreseen in table 33, given that such cables are intended solely for the connection of equipment.” So, my friend, it's clear that, despite the physical similarity, PP 500V cables and PP 0.6/1KV cables have completely different applications and characteristics. Therefore, pay attention when specifying the type of cable in your projects.
