Veysel has two children from a previous marriage - Zeynep and Murat. Zeynep devotes herself to working and studying to make a better future for herself whilst Murat works as a labourer. Melek is ill and Elif goes to fetch her medicine from the pharmacy. On the way the girl gets distracted by a kitten and climbs into the back of a truck to rescue the distressed animal. The driver doesn’t see Elif and drives off with her in the truck. Melek is distraught when Elif doesn’t come home. Both her and Zeynep look for her, but can’t find the girl. When the truck driver discovers Elif he takes her back to the town and reunites her with her mother. Whilst Zeynep is looking after Elif, Melek goes to her cleaning job in the local health clinic. Melek feels faint and the doctor tells her she has pneumonia and must go to hospital. Meanwhile Veysel promises to give Elif to a child trafficking gang in return for learing his gambling debts. Luckily Melek overhears Veysel making the promise and asks her old friend Ayşe to take Elif away. When the men come to take Elif, she isn’t at home.
