Dall'America a Capri per festeggiare i suoi 100 anni

(Text and video: Giuseppe Catuogno) - Mrs. Ida Di Pinto, originally from Capri, left her native island at a very young age and emigrated to America for love. But her ties to her homeland remained strong, and she returned to Capri several times throughout her intense life, even for short periods. Now she has fulfilled what was perhaps her greatest dream: to celebrate her 100th birthday in her native Capri. From the United States, from the town of Jonesborough in Tennessee where she lives, she flew with her family to Italy, reuniting her numerous relatives who live around the world with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who live in Capri. Together, in the late afternoon of May 28, 2026, they celebrated the centenary, amid balloons and confetti, with a procession that wound through the streets of the island, to the rhythm of the popular melodies of the folk group Scialapopolo Capri. Mrs. Ida danced and sang with overwhelming energy in the famous Piazzetta. "To dear Ida, a native of Capri in mind and soul, who at one hundred years of age continues to lovingly and proudly preserve in the treasure chest of her heart the language, memories, and roots of her Capri": this is the text engraved on a parchment, signed by the mayor of Capri, Paolo Falco, which the municipal administration presented to Mrs. Ida during the celebrations.
